Flying high! – at what cost to our planet?

Earlier in 2019  Sir David Attenborough’s critically important TY programme  Climate Change – The Facts’  was screened. I reported in detail on the scientific evidence covered in the programme – click HERE  to read.

Donald Trump’s denial of the dire effects of climate change and the effects of a warming planet reminds us that there are many people out there that think that all talk of a climate crisis is unwarranted. Whether you are a believer or not please read on…………

Greenhouse gases are having the effect of warming the planet …. and now in the 21st century they are increasing at an alarming rate!  This article by the National Geographical explains why they are at a record high! – click HERE or see below:

Greenhouse gases are being produced at an alarming rate!  According to the UK Government in 2017, UK net emissions of carbon dioxide were provisionally estimated to be 366.9 million tonnes metric). Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main greenhouse gas, accounting for 81 per cent of total UK greenhouse gas emissions.  Click HERE to see the report dated 29 Mar 2018.  On an individual basis we In  have an average individual carbon footprint of about 9 tonnes of CO2 per year but that’s only an average for everyone from children  though to the older generation. It varies  tremendously depending on your lifestyle or work. For instance, if you drive a vehicle for your living you could easily treble this figure. According to  Carbon Footprint  the average petrol car produces 2.99 tonnes of CO2 annually. But if you are a frequent flyer this CO2 emission rapidly increases:

According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA)  just one return flight from London to New York produces a greater carbon footprint than a whole year’s personal allowance needed to keep the climate safe. Or put it another way –  according to My Climate  one person on one flight on a round trip from London to New York (US), JFK,  in economy class, would use  1.8 tons of CO2. Let’s say there are 300 people on the flight – that one flight gives off 540 tons of CO2! Just on one flight!  Using Carbonify to calculate how many trees one would have to plant to compensate for this one flight of 300 passengers I reckon we are looking at over 6000 trees. Just for one return flight UK to New York!  (one Metric tonne = 1,10 US tons)

Obviously one can question all calculations but surely everyone will agree there is something serious going on. On almost a daily basis warnings are given of the impact of global warming.

Recommendation: Check out what the experts say……….. click on the image below to see what the UK Government’s Committee on Climate Change say:

The Committee on Climate Change (the CCC) is an independent, statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008.  Their purpose is to advise the UK Government and Devolved Administrations on emissions targets and report to Parliament on progress made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for climate change.
