Lewes District Council

The Council is made up of a central ‘Cabinet’ and various committees. The Cabinet is a small group of members, in our case made up of the members of the controlling party, the Conservatives, who make the main decisions associated with the Council’s policy. Amongst their number they have a number of ‘lead councillors’ who take responsibility for certain portfolios within the Council’s remit. Cabinet membership (as from Nov 2015) is as follows:

  • Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Business – Councillor Andy Smith (Leader of the Council and Chair of Cabinet)
  • Cabinet Member for People and Performance – Councillor Elayne Merry (Deputy Leader)
  • Cabinet Member for Finance – Councillor Bill Giles
  • Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling- Councillor Paul Franklin
  • Cabinet Member for Planning – Councillor Tom Jones
  • Cabinet Member for Housing – Councillor Ron Maskell
  • Cabinet Member for Customers and Partnerships – Councillor Tony Nicholson
